An Essay on the Creation of 3D Animation “Life Cycle”

國立臺北藝術大學 / 科技藝術研究所 / Author:Sun Hung

Abstract

Human economic activities have great impact on the environment, which has been greatly damaged and is deteriorating. As a result, not only the living sphere for humans is ruined, but also many biospecies are severely endangered and facing extinction. Economic development has caused the degradation of nature and spoiled the habitat of these species. Whether the murder is direct or indirect, intentional or unintentional, humans have engaged in killing these species. Quite often the killing is intentional, which further demonstrates the fact that human being is the greatest enemy of these extinct species.

The primary hypothesis of the creation of my 3D animation “Life Cycle” is based on the question, “Would the circumstances be better for the environment and the other species, if human beings did not exist at all?” All characters in this animation are icy, metallic robots, appearing in a landscape that shows no signs of life. The short film assumes an overall tone of bleakness and gloom, against the ending scene where nature re-emerges full of life. Thus, the main theme of the story is to emphasize this contrary between life and death.

The production of “Life Cycle”is, in a way, an important documentary of my personal experiences. This is the first time I undertake the production of such an animation drama. Three years of studies and the previous work experiences of mine have lent a support to its accomplishment. Through the analyses and organisation of every part of this animation, I have explored some possible changes which were brought forth by composite techniques to the thinking and producing processes of 3D animations. In doing so, I hope to generalise an applicable working process for individual creators of 3D animations.
