01. Yu-Hsiang Wu:Dancing Snow for Percussion Trio/吳玉翔《雪舞》為擊樂三重奏(2014)

One of the most prominent composers of the twentieth century, György Ligeti (1923-2006) experimented with various musical styles, as he transcended conventional boundaries to bring innovations, which led him to develop several unique compositional techniques. Micropolyphony, a technique which consists of complex pitches and rhythmic structures, in order to produce massive sound effects as slow and even stasis flows, is one of Ligeti’s trademark and secured his place in music history. Ligeti’s Ramifications, composed for 12 solo strings or a string orchestra, is a composition by applying the compositional techniques of Net-Structure and mechanical rhythm which developed from Micropolyphony.

Through the in-depth research into the composer’s life and educational background, combined with literature review and compositional analysis, this thesis feature in the comprehensive survey of Ligeti’s compositional concepts and techniques of Ramifications. Furthermore, after analyzed Ligeti’s Ramifications, the author compiles Ligeti’s musical languages and techniques, combines with her own compositional thoughts and concepts, and incorporates them into self-composition, Eidos (2018), a work for chamber orchestra. With understanding and internalization of composing technique and musical language from Ligeti, it makes the author enhance her personal musical thoughts and initiates the innovation and breakthrough in the further compositions.
