Alexander Arutunian (1920-2012) Trumpet Concerto is one of the most important

Trumpet Concertos since modern era. This piece was written in 1950, and had

captured the hearts of the audiences with its folk music style, beautiful and emotional

melodies, and many virtuoso phrases. Because of his musical style, he became an

international one of the most well-known composers.

Arutiunian’s Trumpet Concerto was inspired by a good friend, Zolak Vartasarian. He

was served as Principal Trumpet at Yerrevan Opera in the capital of the Republic of

Armenia.

This thesis discusses the background and the writing process of the A Flat Major

Trumpet Concerto, including the personal life of the composer and the history of

Armenia during the time, and other important pieces in the same period. The research

also includes comparisons of different performers of this piece, such as how they

interpreted this work and analyses the theme, motive, structure and harmonic aspects

of the work, in order to deeper research the structure of this concerto piece, and to

provide future performers of this Trumpet Concerto with more concepts and ideas to

interpret this work.
