Hwang-Tzu (1904-1938) was born in a pendulous period, the end of Ching dynasty and beginning of Republic of China. He was the first musician who obtained Western music diploma in China. He made great efforts to systematize Western music theory for teaching, put it in words and then apply them to his composition after returning to China. In his art songs, Hwang-Tzu utilized simple but accurate musical language to express the artistic conceptions of poetry, and both content and form of art songs got united with the poetry perfectly.

This study aimed to analyze and interpret six art songs of Hwang-Tzu. The researcher wished that readers could relish Hwang-Tzu’s art songs and made more people sing and promote those era-representative songs.

The purpose and structure of the study was stated in the first chapter. Chapter two introduced the development of Chinese art songs in the time. Biography and compositions of Hwang-Tzu were presented in chapter three, followed by analysis and interpretation in lyrics and melodies of his six art songs in chapter four. A conclusion and summary were made in chapter five.
