Yang Chun, the classical pipa piece, is a divertimento which applied melodic principles such as cycle and linking. The materials of Yang Chun is a variation coming from the basic rhythm of the ancient widespread folk tune “ Ba-Ben”. “Yang Chun” of the Pinghu school, is very different from today’s “Yang Chun Bai Xue”. It has its unique style in the processing of paragraphs, headings, melody, speed, and finger skill. The purpose of this study is to investigate the improvisations in “Yang Chun” of Pinghu school as well as the historical development of “Yang Chun Bai Xue”, and to examine the differences of playing content and notation’s versions.
Based on the main outline of five pipa schools, the study applied the background of the most widespread Wang School of Pipa to investigate the sources of “Yang Chun”, and its development of “Yang Chun Bai Xue”. It also discussed the improvisation in “Yang Chun” of Pinghu school and analyzed the the difference among the figural, fingering and rhythm. Because of lacking recording data of “Yang Chun” of Pinghu school, the author put forward the viewpoints by the investigation of the artistic styles, the title of music paragraph and musical structure.
The research result demonstrated that the development of “Yang Chun”is based on the structure of “ Ba-Ben”. There are different styles and artistic aspects between the most widespread “Yang Chun Bai Xue” of Wang school and “Yang Chun” of Pinghu school. “Yang Chun” of Pinghu school formed its unique pipa art by using the rich fingering. “Yang Chun” inherits pipa schools’ artistic techniques and becomes an innovation, the significant classic today.
