The thesis is an analysis of Dichterliebe, the German Lieder which comprises sixteen love poems written by German poet Heinrich Heine and the poetic piano part composed by his contemporary composer Robert Schumann. The combination of words and music conveys subtle emotions and profound perspectives of literary minds and musicians in the Romantic Period during the nineteenth century. Those who wish to explore and conquer this form of art must have a deep understanding of literature and music. Born into a family of a book dealer, Schumann had the opportunity to devour books and thus freed his mind through them. To justify himself as a musical poet, he composed over two hundred Lieder during his “Liederjahr” (1840-1841 A.D.).

A major in English Literature at college, I present the thesis with a view to reading between the lines of Dichterliebe, in which both Masters transcend with their romantic visions and lives.
