Inner Facade is a multimedia composition for oboe, cello, piano, live Electronics and video. This piece is created with Dodecahedron and its geometric elements, like Pentagon cutting and the extension shapes as a core concepts. Inner Facade contains three movements which are Essence, Overturn and Complexity. The first movement Essence depicts the process that the Dodecahedron is built from a point to the whole model and comes back to a point at last. The second movement Overturn express the changing process of dodecahedron from static to rolling. The third movement is a circular passage with complex overlapping rhythms and reveals the interweave which is hidden in the regular polyhedron.
Inner Facade uses musical structure, pitch and rhythm to portray the complex and oppositional characteristics of Dodecahedron and makes the interaction between instruments and electronic music to appear the duality feature of polyhedron. Digital videos apply multi-layered mixture to express subjective surface and conceal negative image. With interactivity of instruments, electronic music and video represent the Dodecahedron’s simplicity and complexity.
This thesis shows the creative motivation and geometric characteristics of the Dodecahedron and interprets every part according to the movement.
