In unaccompanied dance music for solo violin, German composer Johann Sebastian Bach’s Six Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, BWV1001-1006 present rigorous musical structure and overwhelming performance techniques. Except for adopting complete Baroque sonatas and partitas’ form, J. S. Bach also added innovative change in structure and inserting variation phrase. This composition has significant status in violin’s developmental history.

This thesis focuses on J. S. Bach’s Partita for Solo Violin No. 2 BWV1004 as the main research scope. The historical background of Baroque suite forms, developmental history of the Baroque Period, music form analysis, the interpretation had been obtained from taking the performance versions of each period’s performers as a reference and combining the research’s results were discussed in this study.

This thesis is divided into five chapters, each of which presents the results relating to one of the research questions: Chapter 1 determines the motive, approach and purpose of this research, Chapter 2, an overview of J. S. Bach’s violin works and Baroque unaccompanied dance music; Chapter 3 analyze the structure and creative techniques of J. S. Bach’s Partita for Solo Violin No. 2 BWV 1004; Chapter 4, the interpretation and suggestion which were according to the results of research and analysis. Lastly, Chapter 5 is the conclusion. This dissertation was providing a musicological source and a suggested interpretation for people as a performance reference.
