A Creation of Patchwork Art for the Collective Memory:The Memory of Dajia Mazu Pilgrimage

國立雲林科技大學 / 視覺傳達設計系 / Author:CHANG, PING-FENG

Taiwan’s Dajia Mazu pilgrimage procession is designated as important national intangible cultural property, and hailed as one of the world’s three largest religious activities by Discovery Channel, and Mazu beliefs and customs have included in the list of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2009. However, the memory of pilgrimage may change the communication styles of cultural transmission, resulting from technological networks and social media. In order to preserve these memories and experiences, we use “patchwork art design” as a link between the transformation and integration of culture and art. In addition, this creation gives Mazu pilgrimages a new presentation of the cultural landscape; dialogue and connection with the audience; and it helps imperceptible benefits for the inheritance role of Mazu culture.

First of all, this creation builds the foundation of the connotative meaning of Dajia Mazu culture through a review of literature. The second is to construct the questionnaire survey, which is based on observations of actual participation and summarized expert opinions in international forums. Finally, the results of 212 valid questionnaires collected from devotees and pilgrims going on foot, three aspects were summarized, including “local images,” “sensory aspects,” and “emotional aspects.” Meanwhile, based on the collective memories of the participants, different creative forms were used on the six major subjects, namely “Departure of the Procession”, “Dajia Mazu”, “Crawling under the palanquin”, “The Crier (Bao Ma Za)”, “Selfless Service”, and “Wishes for Longevity”. In particular, this creation combines the visual elements and puts the collected lucky charm from the pilgrimage flag and Mazu-connection goods into the patchwork. Furthermore, this creation designed a series of related products with the theme of the dressing of the “chairmen”, and a video recording of the process makes this creation more complete.

This creation hopes that through the visual transformation of patchwork art, it can stimulate people to deeply understand cultural heritage and reflect on how to preserve the gradually forgotten collective memory. Also, this creation benefits to promote the more positive development of Mazu cultural festival, enable participants to create resonance and recognition, and attract more public attention.
