The topic of this dissertation is about identifying the possibility of depression through ones art. Even though there are a lot of the related researches, the author still wants to share her subjective experiences through ink painting artworks, and wishes to resonate with this to achieve a mutual encouragement with the audience.
Taking depression as the starting point of this research, it extends to related topics such as conformity, smiling depression, psychic healing. In this research, ink is used as the main media and how the symbols incorporated into the composition convey the painter’s inner journey.
This research is divided into five chapters. The first chapter begins with the motivation, purpose, range and methods of this research about creations related to depression, and describes the correlation between depression and the topic “ Seeking the Path in Vanity Fair ”. Chapter Two discusses the possibility of conformity and the presentation of depression in artworks with related theories. The purpose of Chapter Three is to describe presentation skills and creative process, including the symbols commonly used, inspiration methods, art modeling and media application.
Chapter Four exhibits five series of works, namely “Encounter”, “Desire”, “Prison”, “Depression”, and “Healing”. Each representing five steps of mental states with the same Mandarin pronunciation. In addition to introducing creation concepts of each works, Chapter Four also includes an analysis of the form and process of series creation in more detail. For example: symbols, pattern design, auxiliary applications such as body model and computer auxiliary, source of inspiration, and so on. The last chapter concludes on creation and outlooks of future, involving acquisition from creation, mentality adjustment to depression, and future direction of creation.
