Calligraphy is a kind of unique visual art in our country. Countless calligraphers of the past have created excellent works that have combined beauty and brilliance to the history of calligraphy. The development of calligraphy art is changing as time goes by. Until now, most of calligraphy works have simply expressed strictly structured content; every line and row constructed neatly. However, from the modern aesthetic standard, it seems new ideas are missing amongst these works. Therefore, at present people observe a lack of freshness when viewing traditional calligraphy and their attraction to it becomes less and less, which could possible make writing calligraphy an activity only a few people partake of in their free time or for fun.

The topic of this research paper is based on author, Yu Peng-Horng’s calligraphy works. While studying in the master program at The National Taiwan University of Arts, he focused entirely on calligraphy creation. In Yu Peng-Horng’s works, you can see traditional calligraphy lines, dots, stokes, etc., but in addition to these normal historical constructs of calligraphy, there are some well-designed, deformed, exaggerated effects leading to diversification and a closer resemblance to life. Yu Peng-Horng intends to combine traditional and contemporary calligraphy in order to invent calligraphy works with modern style.
