This thesis focuses on the analysis and conducting interpretation of Ode to the Sun, a Chinese orchestral piece composed by Wang Danhong in 2015. Ode to the Sun consists of four movements, titled “Treading the River,” “Carrying Cargoes Up the Mountains,” “Longing” and “Ode to the Sun” respectively. The piece draws upon indigenous folk elements of the Bayu area, and is infused with the unique charm and culture of Bayu. The deep inner emotions and magnificent power of this work reflects the broad-minded spirit and resilient force of life inherent in the working people of the Bayu area.

This thesis investigates the musical interpretation of Ode to the Sun from a conductor’s point of view. In the first chapter, I introduce the subject, goals and methods of my project; in the second chapter, I provide a biography of the composer and lays out the background of her compositions. The third chapter analyzes Ode to the Sun; in the fourth chapter, I explain my conducting interpretation of the piece while comparing the interpretations of three conductors. Lastly, I conclude my project in the fifth chapter. This process has helped me grasp the deeper cultural thoughts of the composer, and has also allowed me to find out about the various conducting techniques can be utilized in this specific orchestral piece.
