This report is written by choreographer Chia-Chy Chang as part of her graduate project Self Collections 2012–2022, completed in the MFA Program in Dance at the Taipei National University of the Arts. The report centers on the internal dialogue between subject and object within the self, exploring how the self reflects upon and dissects itself. It also documents how the artist uses the body as a medium and adopts the narrative structure of a "music album" to develop a theatrical performance centered around the theme of self.
The paper is divided into five chapters. Chapter One, the “Self” in Self Collections, reviews the artist’s educational and creative journey, tracing the aesthetic forms, ideologies, and methods that inform the work. Chapter Two, the “Collections” in Self Collections, discusses the motivation behind the piece, its conceptual framework, and creative strategies. Chapter Three, Self Collections, analyzes the sequence of the performance tracks, examining the imagery and its symbolic meanings. Chapter Four, Destruction and Rebirth, serves as a conclusion, reflecting on the challenges encountered during the creation and performance process. It offers a critical summary of the artist's creative path to date and outlines future directions.
