A Probe into the Expressions of “Quotation” and “Symbol” in George Crumb’s Two Chamber Works/Graduation Recital

東吳大學 / 音樂學系 / Author:YEH, TING-YI

Composers in the twentieth century were constantly searching for new creative techniques, among which "quotation" and "symbol" have become a trend of creative thinking and writing techniques and attitudes in the twentieth century. George Crumb (1929-), a famous American composer, has used the expression of "quotation" and "symbol" in many of his works to construct another meaning behind his personalization. In this paper, we will look at two of his representative works, "Four Moons of the Night" and "Black Angel," and explore the deeper meaning of the "quotation" and "symbolic" compositions by tracing the background of their creation and the use and expression of their materials.
