Today, because of the rising awareness of environmental protection, promoting the sustainable transportation has become a global trend. Against this backdrop, riding bicycles, one of the major modes of green transportation, has consequently been valued worldwide. In Taipei, most people also embrace the idea of environmental protection. To facilitate the riding of bicycles, the city government has built riverside bikeways, urban bike lanes, bike-sharing system, etc. to create a safe and convenient bicycle-riding environment. These efforts have significantly increased the number of people riding bicycles in Taipei. In this thesis, I include Taipei's current bicycle culture as the foundation of my illustration project. More specifically, I use the simple and bright features of the Art Deco style to represent the vibrant and diverse aspects of the bicycle culture in Taipei.

First, I examine the origin of the Art Deco style and its development. I also review the characteristics of this style in graphic design, and the definition and different types of illustrations. Second, I study the works of five illustrators during the Art Deco movement period, and four contemporary illustrators whose works are in a similar style and who have bicycle-related works. These are all references for my illustration project. Third, I trace the history of Taipei's development towards Velo-city. Then, I conduct field trips to take photos of the scenes of various kinds of people to establish the content of my illustration project. These scenes include 1) cyclists doing recreational activities along the riverside bikeways, 2) workers and students using bicycles to commute to their offices and schools, 3) bicycle repair professionals doing their work, and 4) cyclists racing at the Taipei stage of "Tour de Taiwan". Finally, I use my imagination to organize all the materials to draw my drafts, and finish the illustration works by computer graphic software.

This illustration project is composed of a series of 12 illustrations, and they are all released as a public exhibition. The core value of this series of illustrations is to integrate the humanities and nature of the bicycle culture in Taipei, and the characteristics of the Art Deco style. By doing this, my project uses imagination to draw the characters and scenes in an artistic way. Expressing the brisk, rich and vital sights of the bicycle culture in Taipei, my works record Taipei's development journey. I hope that this series of illustrations will make more people understand and appreciate the achievements of what Taipei has done in developing the bicycle environment. I also hope that more people will recognize the importance of green transportation, and that we should make more efforts together to increase the level of bicycle-friendliness in Taipei.
