This thesis uses the “Liao Tzu-Yao Graduation Concert” as an example to explore the similarities and differences between the Beiguan plays “FuGuiChangChun,” “XieJia,” and their various versions. The main discussion compares and explains the Tian-Guan ritual plays transmitted by Beiguan master Tian Wen-Guang, including “FuGuiChangChun,” “XieJia” and other versions. In the second and third chapters, this thesis analyzes and discusses the characteristics of melodic patterns of “FuGuiChangChun” and “XieJia” as transmitted by Tian Wen-Guang, particularly the leading string interpretations of the melodies played by the lead and secondary performers. The plays “FuGuiChangChun” and “XieJia” mainly feature tunes on traditional melodies. The melodies are categorized into two parts based on their musical patterns: non-metrical tunes and metrical tunes. Additionally, there is another version of melodies that serve to link the plot through pure instrumental music. This thesis analyzes and explains these three versions of melodies through transcription. Interpreting through performances of various musical genres, the author determines the tempo, note durations, and of performers in the musical piece, these factors subsequently influence the performance techniques used during the execution of the music.
