The “Mr. Dinosaur” cartoon uses animated characters to interpret today’s society: because submitted or forced to believe in distorted values, most people are invisibly assimilated by such society, to the point of even losing themselves. The plot utilizes an emotional animation design to convey the contradictions within the mind of the protagonist, the dinosaur costume and constantly present badges represent the protagonist’s struggle between a reality of obedience and self-pursuit. This paper discusses how the UPA style is applied to the creation of animation art, comparing the characteristics of UPA animations from different periods and their influence on cartoons designed after the 20th century, also showing the UPA style features present in the artistic style of “Mr. Dinosaur”. In this cartoon Toon Shading and Texture were used to blend UPA features into a 3D animation work. “Mr. Dinosaur” is actually not a fully UPA style animation: color blending and space composition were slightly modified, and the UPA style flat design was combined with features from contour drawing in a 3D animation, making the overall style of “Mr. Dinosaur” unique.
