Despite the growing prominence of feminist ideologies and heightened female consciousness, many women continue to be shaped by traditional patriarchal norms, which dictate adherence to prescribed societal roles. This context contributes to psychological challenges resulting from sustained suppression. Therefore, this creative research analyzes the stories of Sleeping Beauty and Snow White from the Grimm’s Fairy Tales to reflect on the issues that women face in contemporary society.
This study examines Sleeping Beauty and Snow White through the lens of Jungian psychology, analyzing the archetypal elements and their significance within the narratives’ characters and plots. It correlates the depicted processes of female suppression, dormancy, and awakening with modern issues, including female empowerment, domestic labor, sexual autonomy, and patriarchal constraints. The study also investigates poster design principles, focusing on figure-ground reversal techniques, and conducts a case analysis of eight educational posters adopting this method. This analysis synthesizes key design considerations, such as layout typology and color application, to inform the creative process.
Entitled “HER”, this study integrates Jungian psychological analysis of the archetypal elements in Sleeping Beauty and Snow White with figure-ground reversal techniques to produce 17 educational posters. By merging fairy tale narratives with Jungian frameworks, these visual works diverge from conventional fairy tale imagery, prompting viewers to reconsider women’s issues, including female empowerment, patriarchal oppression, emotion labor, domestic labor, women’s autonomy, sexual autonomy, and male-centric paradigm. The posters engage audiences by presenting layered visual messages within a single composition, conveying the deeper meanings of fairy tales and fostering reflection on contemporary gender-related concerns. By evoking emotional resonance, the study encourages viewers to re-examine their own experiences and perceive their internal patriarchy. The process reflects on one's current state and serves as a dialogical medium that facilitates an awakening of female consciousness.
