In recent years, Zhongruan has been gradually increasing its status in orchestra. In traditional Chinese musical field, the purpose of transplanting musical instrument and adapting works is to expand the instrument’s repertoire and showcasing its versatility. Modern large-scale musical works for Zhongruan have become trendy and they are heavily focused on techniques. In writer’s opinion, Zhongruan and Guqin are both Chinese traditional musical instruments with a long and established history, and using zhongruan to interpret classical qinqu is one way to achieve recomposing classical songs into something new which create sparks. Such sparks has brought to the writer’s attention and further explore the motivation behind it.

Xing Liu, a Zhongruan player and composer. In his 2009’s Zhongruan album- Guang Ling San- all the songs were recomposed and rearranged based on performance techniques and musical interpretation from classic Guqin qinqu, and Guang Ling San song collection was published.

The writer roughly analyzed the original qinqu and interviewed Xing Liu, the composer, to further understand the purpose of transplanting and adapting qinqu. Furthermore, the obstacles that were encountered along the process and special techniques that were used.

From above analysis and discussion, we will further discuss Xiao Xiang Shui Yun and Jiu Kuang these two pieces. The discussion will be focused on how to use Zhongruan to perform adapted qinqu; in addition, to add the latest Zhongruan performing technique without losing the originality of the songs, at the same time to reflect the uniqueness of Zhongruan. All is to hope that by performing Zhongruan will generate continuum of classical qinqu and also precisely grasp the performance style interpret through music.
