This research is mainly focused on the discussion of ornamentation in baroque period. The author analyses the development of ornamentation and its correct usage on music interpretation and performance by studying works from Bach, analyzing the roots of ornamentation and its variation from different countries, and using the music of "J. S. Bach: Sonata for Viola da Gamba and Harpsichord, No. 2, BWV 1028" as references.

This dissertation has three chapters for analyzing Bach's “Sonata for Viola da Gamba and Harpsichord, No. 2”. The first chapter discusses the life of Bach and his works. The second chapter compares the differences of indication and interpretation on ornamentation between composers in Italy, France, and Germany. The third chapter analyses the composition and the usage of ancient instruments in this work , with comparison in various music editions. As the result, the reader will have deeper understanding on Bach's Sonata for Viola da Gamba and Harpsichord, No. 2.
