The subject of the thesis is the series of the works “Space and Depiction”, mainly elaborating on spacial structure and the spirit of abstraction in the abstract painting field. The writer, through self-learning, has been trying to simplify the figurative object, and organize the space in painting from multi-perspective angles and in repetitive shapes. The purpose of the practice is to build up the personal linguistics in the works.

The writer sorts out the development of works into two parts. The first is specified with geometric abstraction, composed of such plastic elements as linear, vertical, diagonal lines, etc. to create visual illusions of distance, depth, and flatness in painting. Through the process, the writer can eventually have a clear view of manifestations of space in modern paintings and put them into practice, and explore the spirit of abstract art. The second one encompasses symbols and recognizable shapes additionally; for example, there is an isolated tree in the work, symbolic of the loneliness of people living in the city. The painting space, made up of color patches, was inserted with signs belonging to the city for the purpose of destroying the flatness of patches in painting. With the intervention of such odd signs, the space, originally with a state of stability, now has been transformed into a vision of instability. Flat patches symbolize the harmony of human mind, whereas the city signs with painterly strokes imply the unstably mental condition of human unconsciousness.

The thesis is divided into five main chapters. The first chapter includes the motivation of works, the approaches of the study, the limitation and the goal of the thesis. The second part is the collections and discussions on theoretical materials. The third is about the conception of the works and the analysis of the forms. The four is the description of the procedure of creating artworks and the analysis of the series of the works “Space and Depiction”. The fifth is the conclusion and the potential prospects of the following works.
