A Critique Essay on thesis Graduation Film Play

國立臺北藝術大學 / 電影創作學系碩士班 / Author:Myo Aung

PLAY, is a short story about a Burmese teenager who experiences the death of a friend on a bright, sunny afternoon. The military government has once again taken control of Myanmar, leading to the closure of schools. Gao, a young boy who no longer has to attend school, and a group of idle friends play games with hidden violence on the train tracks in the village to resist their anger. Gao goes to find a friend who didn't show up today because he lost the game, only to discover that both his friend and his friend's mother have died at home. Faced with this unexpected tragedy, he can only pretend that nothing has happened and continues to play football with his friends.

The film delves into the theme of how the young populace in Myanmar is compelled to exist in a state of perpetual fear, in the face of an aggressively tyrannical military government, with no foreseeable prospects of a change in the status quo.

This creative theory examines the film's script in terms of theme, genre, and script structure, and then discusses the film's aesthetic scope from the perspectives of performance, photography and lighting, art design, and editing. The author personally funded the production of this film, so it was shot with a low budget and minimal manpower. I will also elaborate on the advantages and disadvantages of low-budget filmmaking. Finally, the author will summarize various shortcomings in the production process, which will serve as lessons for future projects.
