Since the mid-twentieth century, George Crumb(1929- ) is one of the most influential composers of American Contemporary Music. Undoubtedly, he is a composer of constant innovation and seeking for changes. In his works, the place of having the utmost artistic charm is nothing better that the expression of the timbre. From the view of handling of timbre, it can be seen that the composer is influenced by Webern, to absorb color changes of Webern’s orchestration with short concise forms structure characteristics in the creation, and play a leading role in structure. From the observation of the micro perspectives, it manifests in many different music aspects of Crumb, such as melody, harmony, formal structure and in between the movements etc., it seems to be affected by Bela Bartok’s influence, and to lay particular stress on the use and the concept of the symmetrical arch structure. Herein, this thesis is based on “Madrigals I-IV” as the research object, expecting as in-depth study through the above observation points, and further reveal the development of Crumb’s creative thinking to have a deeper recognition and understanding.
