PAPA OBAMA

國立臺灣藝術大學 / 廣播電視學系碩士班 / Author:LIN,SHENG-HSIEN

"Come, come, come to National Taiwan University; go, go, go to the United States." This was a popular jingle in the Republic of China in the 1950s and 1960s. The meaning included "the path to change," "the direction of social mobility," and "the opportunity to reverse one's destiny." However, not everyone can study at The National Taiwan University. If "going to the United States" fails, is it possible that "coming to the United States" will be an opportunity? During the Cold War, a large number of U.S. troops were stationed in and around Taiwan. At its peak, there were 50,000 visitors a year, and therefore, It was common to meet Westerners in the bustling scenic streets. If a Taiwanese girl happened to be in the right place at the right time, she could be expected to meet and possibly marry an American and live in America.

The U.S. military has created many exotic relationships in Taiwan. According to rough estimates, more than a thousand Taiwanese-American mixed-race children were born. A Zhong Qiu Han Zhong, a mixed-race child with a black appearance, grew up in the mountains of Zhuolan, Miaoli, and can speak fluent Hakka. After the death of his Hakka adoptive father, he began to think about finding his American biological father. He was eager to clarify his own life experience. Finally, he found his African-American father through DNA testing and flew from Taiwan to the United States to attend his father's 70th birthday party.

The documentary was named "Papa Obama" not only because it is interesting and easy to remember but also because it highlights three characters (identities) as "father", "American", and "black" in one sentence. The characters are all covered, and the mysterious life experience of A Zhong is explored. During the unlocking process, he is casually asked, "What if you find your father and find out that he is a relative of US President Obama?" The air condensed for half a second. , A Zhong replied, "Taiwan has established diplomatic relations with the United States..." Everyone clapped and applauded, and the difficult task of finding his father suddenly became easier.
