The purpose of this study is to analyze Edward MacDowell’s (1860-1908) “Virtuoso Studies, Op.46” no.1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.
The first chapter explains the motivation, purpose, and references of this thesis. The second chapter discuss the characteristic of MacDowell’s piano works, creation background of “Virtuoso Studies, Op.46”, and the development of the American composers in the same period. The third chapter explores the form structure, harmony, dynamics of “Virtuoso Studies, Op.46” no.1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. The fourth chapter discuss the interpretation and analysis of this work, and also solution of technique problem. Finally, the fifth chapter is the conclusion.
MacDowell’s studies are mostly character pieces in binary form or ternary form. Each piece has specific technique, such as continuously fast sixteenth notes, playing with two hands alternately, double-notes. In order to perform these studies one should have the techniques and also the musical understanding of the dramatic tension in this work.
In Taiwan, most studies of MacDowell’s piano works focus on suites. Further researches on his works will help more people recognize and understand his music.
