A Content Analysis and Pedagogic Research of A Dozon A DayBook one and Book two

Edna Mae Burnam (1907-2007) was a music composer and a piano educators. She has composed many different piano materials. Her series “A Dozen A Day”are the most commonly used series by many piano teachers. The titles and drawings of the series encourage students’ will of learning and help themto achieve solid basic techniques. Each of the piano etudes is created by the imagination of the composer. She utilizes her experiences with people, matters, and things in her life to bring out students’ imagination between the title and the art drawings in order to raise the fun in learning.

The purpose of this research was to analyzerelated articles of Edna Mae Burnam’s background, music pieces and piano technique. In addition, this research was conducted through content analysis and it further investigates the main teachings of the 120 piano etudes collected from “A Dozen A Day Book One” and “A Dozen A Day Book Two.”

The research was conducted through qualitative Content analysis for all 120 piano etudes“A Dozen A Day Book One” and “A Dozen A Day Book Two”. Each etude is recognized as a unit of the analysis. Ultilizing the content table of both A Dozen A Day Book One” and “A Dozen A Day Book Two as research tool, this study analyzes and investigates included the basic structure, training of techniques, and the focus of teachings of 120 piano etudes.

Conclusions were a) each song was composed to focus on one particular technique in order to help the students to master the main objective,b) Burnam’s teaching planning and ideas were fully shown within the key, tempo, techniques, and the order of all 120 songs of the series. The pieceswere arranged according to the level of difficulties, from easy to hard level, and the diversification of techniques has helped the students to reach the balance in finger techniques.
