“Program music” is one of the most important manifestations in Romanticism music. Many composers were inspired by the literature masterpieces at the time, and they composed program music based on the same subjects. Franz Liszt (1811-1886) was one of the most representative composers in the nineteenth century Romantic period. In his suite of compositions, “Années de pèlerinage”, Liszt revealed his views and aesthetics through the titles of the movements. With literary text and creative details in the music, the audiences can easily understand the composition and the presentation of the performer. Listeners can also musically depict the scene, events, or images from Liszt’s work,“Années de pèlerinage”.

“Années de pèlerinage” was composed between 1835 to 1877. It combined “Années de pèlerinage, Première année: Suisse”, “Années de pèlerinage, Deuxième année: Italie”, “Années de pèlerinage 2 de Année“Venezia e Napoli”, and “Années de pèlerinage, Trosième année”. This series of works was composed during his stay in Switzerland and Italy, penning his thoughts and observations into notes. The work is based from a collection of different poetry, literature, religion, and art. The author will focus on Liszt’s “Années de Pèlerinage 2 de Année“Venezia e Napoli”. The masterwork was first written in Italy, 1837. And after a few revisions, it was finally published in 1860. It Includes three parts “Gondoliera”, “Canzone”, and “Tarantella”.This thesis will also explore the life of Liszt, analyzing the structure, theme and variations, and composition technique, the author could understand more about the composer’s thoughts. The research results will be used as a basis for interpretation.
