The combination of art and technology helps bring more multiple art performance and interactivity which also open more possibility of interdisciplinary creation, not only using multiple materials and compound media, but also emphasizing the interaction of performance form and content. Inspired by Nu shu (women secret writing), “Monologue” is a combination of this kind. This thesis first reviews the discourses on the interactivity of technology art and also discusses the form and style of interdisciplinary art works. Besides, the history, meaning and the writing of Nu Shu are also analyzed to see how women release their inner feelings through secret writing.
Dance, animation, Chinese music and the devices of interactivity are combined in “Monologue”. The writing of Nu Shu is transformed into the images of shadows, black lines, and forest. Dancers’ body and movements are intertwined with these images and thus build up the relations of oppress and later release. In the end of the piece, one dancer holds a device to erase the Nu Shu characters on the screen, implying the final release and escaping.
