The objective of “One Man on Stage” is to explore the possibility of combining both the traditional performance of the outdoor Taiwanese opera and computer animation. The project examines the current status of Taiwanese opera under the influence of social structure change and evolution over time. In the mean time, it reveals the culture symbol of traditional performance for the digital technology application. It enriches the visual mythic abundance for both traditional and technology media.
As to the research aspect of this project, it utilizes qualitative research incline, including data collection, analysis and art critique as the basics. Furthermore, the role of clown from outdoor Taiwanese opera is analyzed to support the academic foundation. For the art creation, field research is conducted based on a true story, digging into the mentality of the character to develop the whole story from storyboarding, filming, digital compositing, sound effect and etc.
It expresses the inside emotion of the clown under the hilarious disguise and the collaborative relationship between the computer animated character and the stage actor. Moreover, in order to create a new milestone for Taiwanese culture, the traditional element is brought back into the contemporary art creation as an attempt, blending into the visual style of digital technology.
