These sculptures reflect an individual’s search for meaning amid the many uncertainties they encounter on their journey through life. Responding to sunlight, a plant grows into its own unique shape. In the same way, each human life is shaped by a myriad of living experiences. The past transforms a person from the inside out, shaping them into their future selves. Reimagined in this way, the trajectory of an individual’s life takes on new meaning.
Plant growth is a metaphor for human growth, while the forging of metal represents the impact of external forces on an individual. The techniques of metal raising, synclastic and anticlastic, by which metal can be slowly stretched and compressed into the form of a living organism, symbolize the passing of the seasons. Just as a plant takes its own distinctive shape under the influence of the seasons, an individual’s experiences are formative.
