Dmitry Shostakovich was one of the most iconic Russian composers of the Soviet period of the twentieth century. He wrote Cello Concerto No. 1 in E flat major and Cello Concerto No. 2 in G major in 1959 and 1966 respectively. Both works were dedicated to the famous Russian cellist Mstislav Rostropovich who premiered them in Russia.

This paper focuses on the influence of Rostropovich on Shostakovich's works, including the relationship between Shostakovich and Rostropovich and their lives, as well as the music style of the two Cello Concerti presented by Shostakovich to Rostropovich. Through this research, the author hopes to obtain have a deeper understanding of the two musicians, as well as the differences in the styles of the two cello works. By examining the technical aspects of the difficult performance skills of the two works, and by analyzing the correct practice methods of them, players can grasp the essence of the works more efficiently.
