In this thesis, I trace how the images of beauty, the females is shaped in the mass media and take the role of females as the theme to relate the definition of beauty from the classical point of view. In my oil paintings, the beauty of females and the selfhood of females are portrayed to present the sense of beauty on many aspects of female images, showing their exterior beauty reflecting on appearances and their inner beauty such as the delicate, graceful, kind and joyful qualities in their minds, trying to create a series of spirited and vital female images. Therefore, it can be said that the purpose of creating these oil paintings is trying to mix the esthetic sense of public with my work--- such as I investigate the connection between mass-communication study and the sociology of art to convey my understanding and identification to selfhood, female esthetic sense and concept of value. I expect my paintings can bring the viewers in and inspire everyone being self-independent and willing to represent themselves. The discussion will begin from chapter two, to understand the historical and social background that constructed of female images and of beauty. I will try to the causes of anxiety as one develops one’s independence, the reconstruction of selfhood, the self-identification and self-representation from the perspectives of female psychology. Following in chapter three and four, I will take my oil-paintings as examples to analyze and to explicate the theme, hoping to associate the critical theory and the practical work in details.
