Music is an indispensable element in our lives. Human beings play music as a media for pleasure and also for fulfillment in a spiritual way. However, learning how to play main-stream musical instruments is not a simple task. The kalimba is a musical instrument from Africa. It is very easy to learn and play without any prior musical knowledge. This research has focused on the structure of kalimbas, and also the different techniques of making musical instruments, in order to improve the traditional kalimba in terms of materials, sound quality and visual design. In addition, this study has covered the cultural meaning of African totems, using the concept of symbolic storytelling to transform the totem into visual design on the kalimbas. As a result, 13 kalimbas are made using the above concept. In these 13 works, 5 are designed with a sound box and 8 without. These kalimbas were also shown publicly in an exhibition. The concepts and techniques in the research were successfully applied and bring users the satisfaction and enjoyment of being able to create music.
