This research studies the oil paintings of supernatural horror genre. Inspired by the 17 short stories by the supernatural horror author Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937), the research adopts the name from the Chinese translation of Dreamlands or Dream Realm (夢幻境) as its title. In addition, the study utilizes German-Jewish art historian Erwin Panofsky (1892-1968)’s Iconology as foundation in the analysis of paintings.
The study first reviews descriptions of western literature on the development of supernatural horror history to clarify the contents of self-creation art pieces, while exploring the meaning of icons used. Furthermore, the author wishes to review the methods of expression for contemporary paintings of supernatural horror, by referring to the analysis of [Macula] and [La Vertigine (Cardinale)] by favored Italian artist Nicola Samori (born 1977) and [QL] by Polish painter Zdzislaw Beksiński (born 1929-2005) as a means to deepen understanding of development source of the painting style.
Moreover, the writer uses the 2013 exhibition [The Angel of the Odd. Dark Romanticism from Goya to Max Earnst] as the starting point in searching for the development background and artistic features of supernatural horror painting. Analysis of [The Nightmare] by Swiss painter Henry Fuseli (1741-1825) sheds light on how supernatural horror painting is portrayed and how the creativity values of Dark Romanticism are reflected, thereby identifying the connection between self-creation and origin of art history.
The author also integrates western literature on aesthetics, starting from Aristotle (384-322 BC), Casius Longinus (213-273), Nicolas Boileau-Despréaux (1636-1711), Edmund Burke (1729-1797), Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), Jean-Francois Lyotard (1924-1998), to the study of Yiwei Yao’s concept of sublime aesthetics, in attempt to understand the role of self in aesthetic creation.
In the end, the study refers to the supernatural horror painting creating process of the author to analyze how the said genre embodies the thoughts and feelings of the painter and how the said genre benefits the painter to develop the oneself aesthetic language and style.
