Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) is one of the most important representation for classical composer of Romantic period. Showing a strong personal style, Johannes Brahms’ piano pieces are characterized by strict adherence to the Baroque counterpoint, by the spirit and framework of the Classical period, and by the incorporation of emotions that leave a profound impression. These pieces encompass a wide range of content, playing techniques, and themes, which reflects his thinking, emotions, and spirit.

This article will revolve within Brahms’s midterm period composition “Variations on a Theme by Paganini” Op. 35, Book 1 as an example. The first part of the study discusses the life of Brahms and the different phases of his creations. The second part outlines the origin and development of variations, explores the creation and background of the piece, analyzes the piece, and discusses how this piece may be performed and interpreted.
