ABSTRACT

The title of this creative discourse is The Space of Desires. Starting from my personal experience, the inner self desire is satisfied through fashion desire of consumption in daily life and expressed explicitly through printmaking creation with different printmaking methods and various vivid object elements. Printmaking can be devided into Intaglio, Relief, Lithography, and Silkscreen, where each method expresses its own specific quality and unique characteristic. I use Intaglio’s specific texture and variations of deep layers and Relief’s strong characters to create The Space of Desires. Spaces such as “virtual”, “real”, “positive”, “negative”, “light” and “dark” are used to create various fantasy worlds and reveal different desires from the inner self. Not only the self-intimate space of desires is closely explored, but more self-desires and needs are discovered constantly throughout the creation process; and at the same time, I am always on the alert during the creation of works, and inspired by the beauty emerging in life again and again and finally find a new direction for my own life.

There are five parts in this thesis and the main ideas and contents of each are as follows:

Chapter Ⅰ: Introduction: The motivation and purpose of the creation, the scope of the research of creation, the methodology and the procedures, and the terminology clarifications.

Chapter Ⅱ: Exploration on theory foundations : mainly on the theories such as Maslow’s hierarchy of needs theory, Carl G. Jung’s (1875-1961) persona theory, Jacques Marie-Emile Lacan’s (1901-1981) mirror stage theory, fashion, theory and symbolic theory. And I clarify my creation thoughts.

Chapter Ⅲ: Implementing the creation: the creation of The Space of Desires is described in detail including the creation ideas, contents, forms, materials and techniques. Explore the creating concepts of fashion aesthetics from the source of desire. Create the artworks comprised of feminine images and fashion symbols by using printmaking as a media, mainly using collagraphy and photo intaglio techniques to elaborate my creations.

Chapter Ⅳ: The Work Description: including Desire Series, Reservation Series, Symbolic Series, and Mirror Series.

Chapter Ⅴ: Conclusions: to examine The Space of Desires and what is learned from it, the value and the contributions, and its vision in the future.
