The notion of romanticism was created while people started promoting the the idea of freedom of thoughts in order to claim human rights of individuals in the 19th century. Franz Liszt 1811-1886) was one of the most critical composers born in this period of time in the 19th century. His legacy in music influenced many composers after his time, even until this day.
“Virtuosic” is always a strong impression that people has towards Liszt who was heavily influenced by Niccolo Paganini(1782-1840). You can see the virtuosity in Liszt’s works include are Hungarian Rhapsody and Etudes d’Exexution Transcendent. Franz Liszt, however, not only composed virtuosic repertoires, he also valued literature and art and incorporated with music. He infused elements he saw in Italy, after traveling around European countries, in his works in the form of program music. Listeners will be able to hear the messages, such as literatures, arts, or landscapes that Liszt was trying to deliver in his music. The work <Années de pèlerinage 2nd Year Supplement, S.162: Venezia e Napoli> that was researched and analyzed in this thesis is one of the example, and it has three pieces: (Gondoliera), (Canzone), and (Tarantella).
This thesis consists of four chapters. The life of Franz Liszt and his musical invention and piano techniques are introduced in Chapter 1 which divided into three sections. The first section talks about the general life of Liszt, whereas his influences in classical music is presented. Section three shows the commonly used techniques of piano playing. Chapter 2
contains the compositional background of < Années de pèlerinage 2nd Year- Italy > and is divided into two sections. A brief summary of the compositional background of <Années de pèlerinage 2nd Year > is mentioned in the first section, whilst the second section specifically goes through three pieces of <Supplement, S.162: Venezia e Napoli>. The core of this thesis is in Chapter 3 & 4, analyzing and interpreting < Années de pèlerinage, Supplement, S.162: Venezia e Napoli>, Chapter 5 is conclusion.
