Gian Carlo Menotti is one of the most important figures in modern American opera; he had produced numerous acclaimed operas in his lifetime. He not only writes the music but also create his own script. This thesis analyzes the unique musical language and the interpretation of the heroine Monica in his play "The Medium". In this study, the author will divide into chapters and section. Chapter one: Introduction, chapter two: the Menotti's Biography and the American modern opera and its features. Chapter three: the music and drama in the "The Medium", chapter four: clarification of characteristics in two of arias in this work. Chapter five: went on to describe and analysis of the music in two arias. Chapter six: to analyze the singing style and interpretation of the music in this work. Last chapter: final conclusion of the papers.
