Sergei Prokofiev's Piano Sonata no. 3 in A minor, op. 28 composed in 1917, is a representative work from his early period. Analysis of this sonata highlighted what Prokofiev in his later years would describe as his compositional style, including lyrical melodies, the toccata, the balance between classical and modern harmonies, and the “Scherzo” character.
The thesis comprises three chapters. The first delineates the development of Prokofiev’s personality and his musical achievement in early life. The second focuses on the text of the sonata, and investigates its composition background, musical form, and thematic unity. The last surveys the whole work through analysis in harmonic reduction, melody, and rhythm and discusses its narrational strategy, with the goal of approaching a suitable interpretation for this sonata.
