Abstract
This thesis consists of the graduate recital and the lecture recital both performed by the researcher. The graduate recital includes the program and program notes. The lecture recital includes the research paper focused on Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s Variation Sérieuses and Ferrucio Benvennto Busoni’s recomposed Chaconne.
The research paper for the lecture recital comprises five chapters. Chapter One discusses the evolution of the variations. Chapter Two addresses listing of the types of piano technical skills. Chapter Three investigates Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s life, and the background of his Variation Sérieuses, and provides discussion on performance skills and annotations. Chapter Four approaches Ferrucio Benvennto Busoni’s life, and the background of the Chaconne, and provides discussion on performance skills and annotations. Chapter Five concludes the research.
The researcher discusses Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy’s Variation Sérieuses and Ferrucio Benvennto Busoni’s recomposed Chaconne with seventeen kinds of technical skills of the variation form:scale, arpeggio, chord, staccato, trill, tremolo, broken chord, repeated-note and single-hand section, chromatic passages for both hands, remote jumps and moving, double mixed tone, double octave unison, irregular tone unison, continuous octave, multiple-voice timbre control, extended palm positions, etc …, in order to make some contributions to the annotation of musical performance.
