George Gershwin (1898-1937) was one of the most important American composers in the early 20th century. His music displayed various national styles: European classical music, jazz, blues, popular music, Afro-American and Latin American music. He succeeded in writing popular songs and presented jazz into the classical area. “Rhapsody in Blue” was one of the popular works of Gershwin. It contains 6 themes: ritornello、train、stride、shuffle、love and tag. The music form and structure was different from traditional genre. The rhythms are variable and the themes varied in unique ways and styles. This dissertation discusses Gershwin’s life, music style, characters of other works and also analyses the structures, themes, rhythms of “Rhapsody in Blue” in details. The author aims to provide practical performing recommendations. All of the music examples quoted refer to Rhapsody in Blue (piano solo), Warmer Bros. Publications.
