Robert Schumann’s piano pieces are extremely important in western music history; the character piece, in particular, is significant among his creations. Kinderszenen Op. 15 ( 1838 ) has all the features of the character piece. The entire piece of Kinderszenen Op. 15 is composed by 13 suites. It does not portrait childhood in general, nor is it composed for children to play. It is how Schumann recalls Clara Schumann’s own childhood memory. This thesis will be discussed in the following three parts: first, the background information of creating Kinderszenen; second, discussion on melody, rhythm and on harmony arrangement; third, analysis and interpretation of this piece. Hopefully with this research, I’d have a more in-depth understanding when playing this piece.
