In the face of various events in contemporary society, people experience different emotional reactions. Facial expressions are one of the most direct and rich ways for people to express their emotions. Therefore, this article aims to explore how to use elements such as tension, figure and ground relationship, grouping, color, and limited depth space in Gestalt psychology, combined with the author's experience during the pandemic, to create facial imagery that corresponds to different psychological states. The aim is to convey an open visual experience vocabulary through abstract and blurred facial imagery, as disease not only activates individual consciousness but also initiates a re-examination of our world. This article is accompanied by Roland Barthes' connotative and denotative sign concepts in semiotics to define the symbol of the epidemic and pandemic themes and analyze the influence of different factors such as time period, region, culture, and religion on these concepts. At the same time, the article also explores the functions and meanings that facial expressions play in art throughout different periods of time.

By manipulating images to disturb the viewer's perception, this article aims to interfere with the meaning conveyed by the connotative sign. Finally, the author presents a series of works that depict the emotions and perspectives that various events in life generate for the author, as well as the exploration and expression of the author's inner world. The article also explains the relationship between Gestalt psychology and facial imagery, and the creative motivation, process, and meaning of the series. The author hopes to present the personal perspectives and feelings towards various events in contemporary society through the creation of a facial imagery series during the pandemic, and to provide a novel and interesting way to explore the fields of Gestalt psychology and facial imagery. Denotative and connotative sign.
