Hsieh, Tsung-Jen (b.1981) is a contemporary Taiwanese composer with outstanding achievements. This paper focuses on his composition “Xiang Yang's Four Taiwanese Poems for Children.” The lyrics of this composition originates from Taiwanese poet Xiang Yang's poetry in Taiwanese language “The Kid in the Mirror,” which includes four poems: “Morning and Night”, “Visible and Invisible,” “The Mirror is a Door,” “I Dreamed about My Mirror.”
This paper contains five chapters. Chapter 1, the introduction, elaborates my research motivation, and the purpose, scope, and methodology of this study. Chapter 2 examines the Taiwanese poet Xiang Yang's life and the compositional background and thoughts of his poetic work “Xiang Yang's Four Taiwanese Poems for Children.” Chapter 3 investigates contemporary composer Hsieh, Tsung-Jen’s life and the compositional background and styles of his vocal pieces “Xiang Yang's Four Taiwanese Poems for Children.” Chapter 4 analyzes Hsieh’s “Xiang Yang's Four Taiwanese Poems for Children” and, furthermore, explores the possibilities of interpretation and performing styles. Chapter 5 concludes this paper.
