An Analysis and Interpretation of Liszt's "Piano Sonata in B Minor"

Franz Liszt 1811-1886 (Hungarian), a famous composer, his extremely miraculous skills of playing piano has taken the Europeans by storm in 19th century, his piano works, has its depth and character are well-known in the world, pushing the technique of playing piano to a new limited.

This thesis is based on Franz Liszt’s Piano Sonata in B minor S178,1852-1853 research topic. This is the only sonata he composed, although he named it as Sonata but it is quite different with the traditional style. He composed it as Single movement, at the same time, most of his piano works are Programme Music but only without Piano Sonata in B minor S178. As a result of this, causing many players has their own perspectives when playing this piano work. For more persuasive, the author study this work by reading, analyzing, listening expert’s playing to absorbing the best to become his own style.

This article is divided into five chapters. The first chapter is about the author's research motivation, purpose and method of study. The second chapter takes Liszt's more artistic connotation from his life, his specialty of his music. The third chapter is analyzing his works and composing background. The fourth chapter is author's interpretation, based on analyzing this work to give author’s opinions. The last chapter is the conclusion, which presents the author's research results.
