Jewelry that tinkles is common in metal craft creations; however, jewelry seldom uses sound to evoke memories. By referencing Paul Klee's theory of polyphonic painting, I tried to convert and integrate my childhood memories of learning music into metal craft creations. Although the subjective consciousness toward “music” differs from person to person, I determined that “sound” is the core element that evokes memory; thus, I began creating forms and structures that generated metallic tinkling sounds. I converted the concept of musical instruments and musicality to create wearable jewelry. This design evokes the traces of intangible sounds in memories.
The items in a series of creations titled “Emotional Resonance” represent the relationships among people. In this series, dots were used to symbolize independent people who resonate with each other because of identification. The relationships implied in these works were extended to the body and various pieces of jewelry. When people wear this jewelry, the tiny tinkling sounds generated by swinging and body movement evoke emotions and memories. The primary aims of this series of creations are as follows:
(a) Exploring the relations between sounds and metal craft creations from the perspectives of art history and art theory.
(b) Identifying the resonance between sounds and emotions to develop ideas for creations.
(c) Applying parts of musical instrument to create jewelry that generate sounds and evoke memories.
(d) Combining sounds and metal pieces to create wearable, tinkling jewelry.
After reviewing and deriving discourses from previous literature, I developed the idea for Emotional Resonance and created a series of works, such as Resonance, Time, and Sound. The designs were created using musical instrument parts and combining sounds and metal pieces to evoke sound-related memories; this endeavor should provide a reference for future creation-related research and development.
