The Analysis and Interpretation of Griffes’s Fantasy Pieces, Op.6/ Kuan-yi Lu Graduate Recital's Cover

Temporarily unlisted

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze and discuss the interpretation of Fantasy Pieces, Op.6 by Charles Tomlinson Griffes. Griffes is an outstanding American composer in the twentieth century. In his published seven piano works, he reflects three different style.

The Fantasy Pieces represents the style which is transition from “traditional German Romanticism” to “impressionistic style”. The structure of this work is delicate, he used poetic texts and descriptive titles, and his own introduction text for prefatory. The research literature included correspondence by Griffes, and other comments and praise from critics to better understand the characteristic and mood of this piece. This thesis focuses on the background, music structure and composition style, and provides recommendations and suggestions for performance practice.
