Commissioned by Jun-Hao Chang in 2016, the work “Dawn and Dusk” was also assigned as the required work for the final stage of the music competition hosted by National Chinese Orchestra Taiwan in 2019. Regarding of the technique and aesthetics of this work, its musical nuance has made it an important work among the Taiwanese Chinese Flute repertoire. The composer, Chen-Ling Liu, is a famous Taiwanese Chinese Flute performer. Her first composition for Dizi, the “Dawn and Dusk” has been enthusiastically welcomed by all after premiered. Right after I learnt the work, I fell in love with it due to its musicality.

The research methods employed include content analysis and interview. By interviewing the composer and three solo performers for this work, I found out that the three performers have individually different interpretation towards this work. Regarding the music idea embedded in this work, the composer reflects a philosophy of life which is unique to each of us. Respect to this, it is allowed to interpret this work by combining personal experiences. However, it is important to recognize the image of “dusk” which represented the last period of a day and the final stage of human life as well. Therefore, the researcher suggests that performing interpreters should view the title of this work as a journey which starts form “dawn” to “dusk” and actually create the corresponding musical images to concrete the work.
