On speaking of the Toccata, a musical composition, its development in each era is quite different. First, toccata presented to be an improvisational prelude in the 17th century. Later, in the 18th century, it became an individual music piece. In the 19th century, it grew into a fast technical music showing the agile of the fingers.
The general topic of this thesis talks about the peak development of toccatas in the Baroque period, that is, Bach’s “Manualiter Toccatas” (BWV910-916). In order to get into this, I will start with its styles and interpretations of his toccatas.
The second chapter shows a conceptual realization of toccatas’ development which leads to the Renaissance and Baroque periods; Moreover, a brief introduction of its contemporary composers and styles will be revealed. The third chapter is a conceptual introduction of Bach’s seven Manualiter Toccatas including the origins, structures and styles of them. In order to know the frame of it, the fourth chapter mainly aims at the analysis of his three Manuliter Toccatas which includes BWV911, 912 and 916. The fifth chapter brings up a suggestion concerning the interpretation of his former three works in its styles, keys and score notations. The sixth chapter is the actual interpretation of the performance.
To conclude, as what I’ve mentioned above, the last chapter is the conclusion of the entire article.
