The thesis sets the four works composed by the author as the main body illustrating the relation between technology and music creation; meanwhile, clarifying the skills and usage of technology in electronic music. The four original works are Ripples for Flute, Pre-recorded, and Live Electronic Music, Observer for Multiple Percussion, Pre-recorded, and Live Electronic Music, Distress Call for Stereo Electronic Music, Amniotic Fluid for Multi-Channels Electronic Music.
The advancement of music technology has brought great convenience to creators and expanded the potential of music creation. For instances, DAW digital sound technology has enabled the author to create various rich sounds and gestures in the sound art work of Distress Call; computer program interaction techniques open the possibility of interactive dialog between human and machine, i.e. the instrument player and computer, in author's Ripples and Observer. The multi-channels software system of Spat 5 developed by the IRCAM (Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music, referred to as IRCAM) enables the author's work Amniotic Fluid to construct 3D auditory and immersive sound effects in different spaces.
This thesis is composed of five chapters. The first chapter, Introduction, states the historical context of music technology. The second chapter, Technology and Music Creation, explains how technology progress reflects in the creation of music, and how music works reflect the characteristics and limitations of the technology used by composers. The third chapter, Exploration of Electronic Music Technology, discusses and explains the electronic music technology commonly used by electronic music composers and the author. The fourth chapter, Analysis of Works and Technological Application, includes the discussion and analysis of the basic concept, material development, and space design in these four original works. The fifth chapter, Conclusion and Reflection, is the conclusion of this thesis and the author's prospect for future creative research.
